Is it wrong to create a fake identity online.

The Ethical Dimensions of the Information Society and Internet Privacy was the focus of a two day consultation held on St. Kitts from Sep 23rd to 24th.

Participants from the eight countries of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), representatives from UNESCO, a team from Harvard University provided interactive discussions on several topics. One discussion that emerged that I’m still struggling with was the whole question of online identities. It was highlighted that some persons create fake identities online and use these identities for illegal reasons. However this was countered by some persons who said that they create several identies one for work, one for their friends and one to receive emails from subscriptions sites etc.

Teachers have created fake identities online pretending to be students and use interactions from those accounts to identify and assist troubled students 

I leave you with a few questions Is it wrong to create a fake identity online ? What is driving users of the internet to create fake identities online ? Can we have an internet where persons feel safe to be themselves ?
