A local ISP recently sent emails to their email users advising that the ISP will be migrating to the Google apps platform . As a result customers will be able to take advantage of the benefits and apps available.
In my opinion the new functionality would be great, access to my documents from anywhere, ability to collaborate online etc..However I'm concerned about what is not being said.
Where will my emails be stored ?
Which government will have jurisdiction over my data?
Individuals may not have too many concerns with these issues, but businesses that handle clients data should.
Some companies do not want their data in certain jurisdictions, so the answer to the where data is stored can be tricky especially since the cloud storage essentially distributes the data across geographical regions .
What about those companies that cannot host their own email servers? Do we have a choice if our ISP uses offshore service providers?
Finally which law would apply is it the local privacy laws or the laws of the overseas provider?
