Internet Governance Weekly Brief : Cybersquatting hits 3,074 cases (WIPO); Berners-lee warns against weaponised web; ICANN 61; cyber war U.S / Russia?

This week ICANN 61 in Puerto Rico with Whois compliance to GDPR, among main theme discussed during the meeting.

On geopolitics, the U.S. will impose new economic sanctions on two-dozen Russian individuals and entities for cyberattacks in the U.S. and meddling in the 2016 election, senior national security officials said Thursday. In addition, the United States has accused Russia of a “deliberately targeted” cyber attack on its energy grid in a plot to gather information on computer management systems in the sector.

On domain name, the number of cybersquatting cases handled by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Arbitration and Mediation Centre reached an all time high in 2017, with 3,074 cases filed under the UDRP.

The United Nations has accused Facebook of playing a “determining role” in stirring up hatred against the Rohingya Muslim minority in Burma.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the world wide web, has called for large technology firms to be regulated to prevent the web from being “weaponised at scale”.

On Net neutrality, more than 30 states are in some form of protest against the FCC’s repeal of net neutrality provisions

On taxation, The Inclusive Framework in BEPS, a coalition of 113 countries, has approved an interim report addressing tax challenges associated with the digital economy, Pascal Saint-Amans, director of the OECD’s centre for tax policy and administration, announced on Twitter yesterday evening.
