SUMMARY
This week, thoughts and comments continues on 'WannaCry' cyberattack which hits several countries affecting hospitals, businesses, and home computers. The attack has reportedly affected over 200,000 businesses across 150 countries since initially being reported on Friday May 12; an unprecedented scale of infection according to Europol. So, Microsoft has used this cybersecurity’s latest headline moment to call again for a “Digital Geneva Convention” to limit future cyberattacks.
On cyberpolitics, Ukraine on Tuesday announced a ban on access to several widely popular Russian websites in an expansion of sweeping measures against Moscow over its annexation of Crimea and military intervention in the country’s east. Moreover, Council of Europe Secretary-General Thorbjorn Jagland has voiced concerns about the decree issued by Ukraine on blocking these Russian websites. Furthemore, China plans to build an integrated national big data center as the country seeks to tap the value of massive data resources in a more efficient and safer way, an official said on Wednesday.
On net neutrality, The FCC's three commissioners voted 2-1 to start the process to undo the net neutrality rules. The repeal would ease regulation of the phone, broadcast or cable industries. On data protection, the European Commission has fined Facebook €110 million for providing incorrect or misleading information during the Commission's 2014 investigation under the EU Merger Regulation of Facebook's acquisition of WhatsApp. In addition, Data protection authorities have been called on to clarify what organisations need to do to remain compliant when seeking to process personal data on the basis of consent under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
As for event, we note World Telecommunication Day on "Big Data for Big Impact".
