SUMMARY
This week, cyber security risks are among the top worries for 2018, according to The Global Risks Report 2018, published by the World Economic Forum (WEF). The disintegration of the internet could lead to disruption of global economies over the next 10 years, the World Economic Forum (WEF) warned on 17 January 2018.
African integration in ICT should be on the agenda of the African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government to be held in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa from 22 to 29 January 2018.
In Europe, "researchers and officials working on internet governance have urged EU institutions to help expand the use of internationalised domain names, which contain letters from alphabets including Cyrillic or Greek, or accented letters like in the word “café".
In Rusia; "last November, news emerged that Russian president Vladimir Putin had approved a plan to create an independent Internet by 1 August 2018, first reported by the Russian news agency, RT. The alternate Internet would be used by BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—and shield them from “possible external influence,” the Kremlin’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, told RT". Facebook has said it will conduct a wider investigation into whether there was Russian meddling on its platform relating to the 2016 Brexit referendum vote in the UK.
China is preparing for a new crackdown on cryptocurrency, planning to stamp out remaining trading in the country, according to state media.
In the US, A group of 22 state attorneys general has sued to block the Federal Communications Commission’s repeal of net-neutrality rules. The multistate lawsuit was filed Tuesday in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, led by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
Internet titans Google and Tencent on Friday signalled possible future collaboration on developing new technologies as the US and Chinese firms announced a long-term patent-sharing agreement. Also, Google Inc. is bracing for its first battle in a London court over the so-called “right to be forgotten." Alphabet Inc's Google said on Tuesday it would add five regions and build three new submarine cables as it expands its infrastructure for cloud customers.
