Workshop 291 - Internet Governance: Economic Recovery and Growth

Presentations sought to address how to continue the development of ICTs in light of global economic situation. It was acknowledged that continued investment was necessary. Egyptian Ministry of Communications highlighted how their continuous development has assisted their growth and development in ICT sector. Contribution to GDP was given as well as overall growth within a year. Egypt plans to continue to be a major player as a transit point (many of the cables go through the Red Sea) between North and South in the Eastern Hemisphere.

The importance of ICTs was underscored when the two cable cuts in the Mediterranean in 2008 were discussed. It was mentioned also that Africa and South Asia account for most of the growing traffic in the Mediterranean corridor. the first Ten terabit system exists in the region.

Asset diversity was mentioned as an issue as well as political empowerment when considering economic growth. Trust in government was also highlighted.

Inclusivity of all stakeholders
