[Tutorial] Use the Community to amplify your blogging power

If you are a blogger, or if you like to be an information hub to receive and forward important messages in your professional and social circles, this may be of interest to you. The idea can work even if you do not have a blog yet.


Today, the Diplo Internet Governance Community has 459 members, and it is growing every day. We are not only Alumni of Diplo education programmes, but also friends and partners. There is one single element that binds all of us together in this network: we are all passionate about Internet governance in the broad sense.

Not only the numbers are big but most importantly many of us are board members of important organizations, professors for large university classes, bloggers and highly connected individuals with strong local and global bonds. From the perspective of the book "The Tipping Point", it would not be an overstatement to say most of us are mavens, connectors and salesmen in the realm of Internet governance.

Because of that, our specialized group has a huge potential to amplify messages. Our newsletter is often forwarded among different mailing lists and social networking groups on Facebook, Twitter and specialized forums.

Here are two simple steps to use the Community to amplify your blogging power (even if you do not have one):

1. Select your best blog posts (or the emails you send and receive in mailing lists), and do a copy+paste here in the Community

2. You can paste your selection either as a new blog post on the main page, or as a specific discussion in the group of your choice, or as a forum discussion.

Too many choices?

In a nutshell, the main difference is this:

1. Blog posts
get higher visibility because they are on the main page. So in case your headline is interesting, the content is well formatted and you put some visual elements in the beginning of the text, chances are that the blog post will get many clicks and the Community members will follow your story. One great such example is the East African IGF.

As a rule, Blog posts do not send notification to users.

2. Group discussions
are targeted for those with the specific interest in the particular field. Because of that, whenever a new group discussion is created or replied to, the members of that particular group receive an email notification, and they may decide to jump in.

Because of that, it is recommended that all members take a look at the existing groups and subscribe to the ones of their interest. But subscribing to groups you are not particularly interested in can lead to some frustration if you get notifications for topics that are not very important.

Keep in mind that all users can change their configurations any time and disable the email notification.

3. Forum discussions
can carry on one debate for a longer period. The best way to explain it is looking at Mwende's topic on electromagnetic fields, or Jean Paul's call for volunteers.

Broadcasting

Some content (either blog posts, group or forum discussions) may be selected and highlighted in the newsletter sent to all members of the Community.
