Participants from the MENA L Group of the IGCBP10 shared their thoughts on e-commerce, particularly on regulatory frameworks. One said that there are no such clear regulations because it is not widespread in their region. People would prefer physical exchange of cash-for-items rather than shopping online and then paying online. Although the concept of e-banking is slowly maturing, many people still do not trust it. Consumer mistrust of online transactions and a lack of legal clarity have been blamed for the stunted development of e-commerce in this region. But another thing to consider is how the overall rates of computer and Internet use is a major barrier, too, other than “trust.” It is not all negative though - some positive opinion did surface due to the popularity of e-banking in their region. Over-all, three things can be surmised from the different opinions: some like it with regards to e-banking opportunities; while others don’t like it because there is no well-developed credit card system in their region; and then there's the issue of a lack of trust in the over-all structure.
