IG Weekly Brief : UN Artificial Intelligence Centre; Europol for cyber crime legislation; Tech firms to testify on Russian interference in US politics; KSK rollover postponed..

SUMMARY

This week, The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is opening the new Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, a headquarters in The Hague to monitor developments in artificial intelligence.

On cybersecurity, Europol has called for tough new legalisation to tackle cyber crime at the end of a 12-month period that saw the scale, rate and spread of hacker activity reach unprecedented levels : Ransomware has emerged as the top cybercrime recently; WannaCry and Petya ransomware attacks had crippled many firms lately; a "growing sophistication in the cybercrime community". In addition, Cyber criminals are now able to access ATMs through bank networks, according to the report by Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre. Furthemore, The United States has asked China not to implement its new cyber security law over concerns it could damage global trade in services, a U.S. document published by the World Trade Organization showed on Tuesday.

On cyber geopolitics, executives from Facebook, Alphabet's Google and Twitter have been asked to testify before the U.S. Congress in coming weeks as lawmakers probe Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 U.S. election, committee sources said on Wednesday.
On hate speech online, The European Commission is calling upon social media companies including Facebook Inc. and Alphabet Inc. to develop a common set of tools to detect, block and remove terrorist propaganda and hate speech.

On Domain name, "the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ("ICANN") today announced that the plan to change the cryptographic key that helps protect the Domain Name System (DNS) is being postponed".

“Fake news” and journalism as a force for peace are the themes chosen by Pope Francis for the Church-sponsored World Day of Social Communications 2018".

As event, we note WTO Public Forum, the Forum for Internet Freedom in Africa and Interpol Cybercrime Conference.
