A very creative idea was raised in the IGCBP - Internet Governance Capacity Building Programme group ACP Pacific F: what about using Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to Internet governance?

This is the contribution made by one of the IGCBP participants during Week 2:

Another angle for explaining Internet Governance and its relevance for its emergence, is mapping of Socio-Economic and Technology principles against Maslow's motivational theory, "Hierarchy of Needs", where the societal needs merge with the internet technology to provide opportunities.
According to Maslow’s Hierarchy, there are five (5) levels in the hierarchy…The first being the bottom of the pyramid where individuals aim to meet basic needs and once needs are fulfilled, they seek to meet successively higher needs in the form of a hierarchy of needs progressively.
Basic Needs – Pre-requisites for Survival.
This level could be used to analyse the Social, Economic and Internet Technology needs of all stakeholders in the internet society.
So here you would have the cyber infrastructure components for building an internet society. -Hence the IG Classification- Infrastructure & Standardisation Basket, Socio-Cultural Basket, Development Basket and Economic Basket.
Safety Needs - The need to provide a Safe environment and implement safe guard measure. - The rise of Internet Security , rights and obligations, privacy vs public - and the need for laws to create safety. as a result you have the Legal Basket Classification.
Need for Belonging - The collective need for greater collaboration and networking using the Internet and fostering collaboration and networking to solve problems of the internet. - This equates to networking amongst Internet governance stakeholders towards achieving a common shared goal and involves awareness of IG issues to foster transparency and collaboration.
Esteem Needs – Deepening of collaborations between different stakeholders, Coherence Management between different Internet stakeholders, (greater sense of achievement) - Increased participation in IG processes, IG decision making, IG Policies etc
Self-Actualization - Here the Internet society in itself can solve problems of and with the Internet, which address the very needs of the society.
(Utopia of Internet Governance)- Will there every be enough participation of all stakeholders to solve problems?
