Internationalized Top Level Domains: The case of Russia (Ivan Zassurski)

On the same panel with Andrei Mikheyev, Ivan Zassurski, from the Lomonossow University Moscow, Faculty of Journalism, made an interesting presentation on the IDNs in Russia. Below is a copy-paste of my original notes.

Older people are unlikely to catch up due to income disparities and also not being able to read the Latin characters, so these are the people who will mostly benefit from the Cyrilic alphabet on the domain name space.

There has been a huge boom on social networks, highlight to odnoklassniki.ru

People are switching from words to pictures. Social networks with videos allow people to communicate without writing.

Yahoo did not penetrate in Russia. MSN neither. These are examples of how it is difficult to enter the Russian market. Google made it because of the technical superiority of its search. But it is far a number 2 after Yandex which has 55% of the market.

Russian entrepreneurs are creating presence in Vietnan and other places.

Google has made a huge success in getting number 2 marketing agency and in this acquisition it would grow a lot.
