Thanks for the hint, Vlada, here is another interesting link regarding the NN debate in the US from WSJ:

BBC brings a story on the new US (FFC) policy on Network Neutrality, and the reactions of the business sector and the consumers:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8267366.stm

Seems their accent is more on wireless (harware). It would be interesting to get a full version and compare with the Norwegian NN principles:
http://www.npt.no/ikbViewer/Content/109604/Guidelines%20for%20netwo...
which cover the areas of capacity and quality of the connection, discrimination with regard to type of application, service or content, hardware or software used or senders/receivers address...

The Norwegian principle was based on a (general) concensus of various stakeholders in Norway and is, to some extend, a soft law ("name-blame-shame" principle). The FCC ones seems to be a regulatory approach.
Which one is more convenient?

Rafik drew my attention to the most recent "NN-violation" in Egypt, as of August:
http://globalvoicesonline.org/2009/08/07/egypt-te-data-fair-usage-p...
and
http://globalvoicesonline.org/2009/08/09/egypt-adverse-reactions-to...

In short, the Egypt's ISP TE-Data started limiting the overall monthly download amount even for the "unlimited" packages that are more expensive.

This is an interesting case: it might not seem as a direct NN violation as there is still free choice of users of what content or service or hardware they will use. But nevertheless their choices are limited by the limited monthly download for the "unlimited" package...

In my opinion the market should regulate this - the more ISPs with the variety of offers and soon TE-Data would stay without users... But - should it is also be the case of the regulatory authority of Egypt?

Let me know what you think. I will also ask our friends from NTRA to comment.

Net neutrality, what is this? To me, it is about like a hands-off policy from providers and the controllers (government) on how the net is run. i agree with Shreedeep that this is one thing, if implemented could avoid if not prevent net discrimination. it also could close the gap of the divide.

I think Net neutrality is something that talks about standard rules, regulations and policies abolishing discrimination. Today the discrimination in internet resources has created a vacuum in between the developed and underdeveloped countries where conflicts are arising. It’s the major obstacle for standardization and until and unless the concept of net neutrality is adapted the objectives and goals of Internet governance forum cannot be achieved. The standardization, net neutrality and IGF are the core component of the future where the success and growth of the internet depends upon them.
