Diplo Internet Governance Community

Stay networked. Get informed. Broadcast your projects.

HI everyone!

Diplo staff is already checking different hotel options for the 2009 delegation. So we need your help here to make a good choice.

We would like to find a place where we could have together the Diplo staff, the fellows and also our friends.

From the practical point of view, this would make all logistics much easier.

But most importantly, when everybody is together, the integration is much better. You may remember that in past years there were lots of simulations on negotiation, diplomatic training, and also future scenarios on Internet governance held by our friends from IISD - Tony Vetter and Maja Andjelkovic.

Diplo delegation in 2006 (IGF Athens) brainstorming at the hotel - very late night...

... and also before breakfast (did we mention that a capirinha party happened on the previous night when the brainstorm session was over?)

Diplo group and friends in 2007 Rio....

... and last year, in Hyderabad, after the successful Net Neutrality workshop (with a continuation planned for 2009)

This year there are many ideas being developed. And to be sure we can have everyone around, we need your confirmation:

Do you already know that you are going to Sharm, and already found financial support from your contacts?

In that case, if you would like to stay in the same hotel as Diplo (we always choose a budget place - no worry) please help our staff doing the reservations.

The sooner you confirm, the better chances we have to stay all together and have a memorable, fun and productive time in Sharm.

p.s. If you already have your financial support to go to Sharm, please reply to this topic or get in touch with Seiiti Arata and/or Vladimir Radunovic.

p.s.2 In case you have not yet obtained a fellowship, keep interacting through the www.diplointernetgovernance.org because we will soon share some ideas on how to do it. I am interviewing some people who will share their experience and ideas - in case you would like to be a volunteer and be interviewed on the topic of your experience as a fellow, please send me a message.

Best

I am hopefully going. I need to check some final issues regarding my cost. We should also list here who has rooms that can host somebody that has limited funds. I will be sharing room with Katitza! :-) Sharing a room is a way to save in costs, get closer to your friends and also a door for future projects together (professional and personal)! :-)
As an ISOC ambassador I'll be present at the IGF2009 in Egypt. So far I have been booked at the Maritim Jolie Ville Golf & Resort Royal Peninsula Hotel & Resort. I will arrive on 13/9 and will leave on 19/9. If I can be of any help please let me know.

Hello All, some of you may already know me, and others will definitely get that chance to in sharm this year. I was wondering if anyone knows which hotel ISOC have booked this year?

Ps Caroline, i think sharing a room is a brilliant idea! lets see if we can make it happen!

Raf
Hi Raf, they are booking us at Maritim Jolie Ville Royal Peninsula Hotel & Resort, Peace Road at Um Marikha Bay, Sharm el Sheikh, South Sinai. I don't see a lot of pics of this hotel online though..just the rooms. It's in the visa letter that Leni Navarene sent us. Did you get yours?

As I mentioned above, ISOC booked rooms in the Maritim Jolie Ville Golf & Resort Royal Peninsula Hotel & Resort. I'll try to get confirmation of this today.

Sleep

Most hotels in Sharm, particularly in the Na'ama Bay area cater for package tourists. There are mostly 3-6 star all-inclusive hotels and there are very few (if any) budget options.

Others are quite far from Naama Bay, so you either are tied to their all-included ration, or need to pay for taxi for every dinner in Naama (although taxi is inexpensive from most of hotels).

For hotels in Na'ama Bay itself, their territory is frequently crossed by a pedestrian street, so the beach may appear across the street from the hotel building--obviously affecting privacy even when using a hotel's pool.

Mid-range
Savoy. Extremely spacious and modern rooms. edit
Sierra. Very small territory for its number of visitors. Airport is very close, and planes fly over the hotel's territory. edit
Sofitel. Large territory is isolated and private, but still within walking distance from Naama Bay--allowing pleasant promenades through a flower alley for a dinner in Naama. Moroccan-style interior and territory decoration; territory smothered in flowers. Very courteous staff--compared to many other resorts of this grade in Sharm. Built around late 80s-early 90s, as bathrooms equipment suggests; plastic chairs on most private terraces. Large swimming pool, tennis court (pay for electric light only?), gym, horse stables available. 3 private beaches, each with a private piece of a coral reef right near the beach. edit

Restaurants: Horizon Bar overlooking the sea; terraces next to the pool both serve dishes from the main restaurant where the breakfast is served. Caesar salad is fine; lentil soup is not spicy and pretty good (if you like lentil soup). Pizzas are quite rubbery. Cucumber soup cold and strange. There's also an Indian restaurant, not reviewed by wikitravellers yet.
Breakfast: 6:30AM-10:30AM; buffet is not refilled after 10AM. Good choice of traditional breakfast meals; custom-made omlettes and fried eggs; coffee is American only; cocoa is made of instant. Whole fruits are not served, but all components for fruit salad are.

Hyatt Regency Sharm El Sheikh, Gardens Bay, PO Box 58, South Sinai, ☎ +20 69 360 1234 (sharm@hyattintl.com), 5 star resort style hotel with 439 rooms and suites, a watersports centre and a spa.

Maritim Royal Peninsula Hotel & Resort, [18].

Grand Rotana Resort & Spa, [19]. About ten minutes from the airport.

The only Five Stars Plus resorts are:
Four Seasons.
Ritz Carlton.
There is a good chance that I am going, but there is still some financial uncertainty. I would appreciate any suggestions for hotels or a note if anybody is looking for a potential roommate. Thanks!
Hi Seiiti and all,

I will be hopefully in Sharm , from my experience back in 2007, I stayed in Jolie Ville is the closest hotel to the venue, very nice but it's very expensive! I suggest Rotana Royal Beach resort it's the second closest hotel to venue , it's a huge resort with fantastic views and will definitely accommodate Diplo folks. reasonable prices for double rooms (it's on the list or recommended hotels). I still did not book there but it was advised to do it the soonest.
