The ITU is currently in the midst of a call for projects in preparation for the Connect the Americas Summit, planned for July 17 - 19, 2012 in Panama City, Panama (more info may be obtained at http://www.itu.int/ITU-D/connect/americas/overview.asp.)They would welcome the submission of projects utilizing ICTs to foster socio-economic development on a Caribbean region-wide scale.

Please note that the deadline for initial project submission is Feb 29, 2012. There will be an opportunity to revise that which is submitted subsequent to this date, however the ITU would appreciate it if what is submitted is as close to the final version as possible.

The ITU's World Telecommunications Development Conference, held in 2010, approved certain Regional Initiatives (RIs) for the Americas. The ITU encourages project proposals aligned to these RIs and the priority thematic areas agreed on by the ITU and outlined below:

Regional Initiatives for the Americas

Regional Initiatives identified for the Americas Region:

1. Emergency communications

2. Digital broadcasting

3. Broadband access and uptake in urban and rural areas:

4. Reduction of Internet access costs:

5. Human capacity building on ICTs, with emphasis on persons with disabilities and people living in rural and deprived urban areas

Identified Themes

a) Broadband as the main solution to reduce Digital Divide;

b) Emergency Telecommunications

c) ICTs and Climate Change

d) Internet and Cyberthreats

There is the "Identification of ICT for Socio-Economic Development Projects for the Region" initiative. This forms an aspect of a greater initiative known as Connect the Caribbean which is currently underway, again through close collaboration between the ITU and other key Caribbean regional organizations. Connect the Caribbean forms part of the preparatory process of the aforementioned Connect the Americas Summit.

Submitted projects are required to follow the ITU format.  Guidelines should be on the website.

I will post further details as I receive them.

The ITU would like to inform everyone that the Connect the Americas website now has an enhanced feature in the form of a project upload facility. This feature may be viewed at http://www.itu.int/ITU-D/connect/americas/projects.asp and allows persons to be able to upload project details directly unto the ITU Connect the Americas webspace. If you would like to submit projects but have not yet done so please submit via this medium. This project upload feature replaces the previous ITU Project Document template and has similar categories.  The deadline is Apr 30, 2012 for the submission of further projects.
