CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY INITIATIVE: WEB 2.0 AND ACCOUNTABILITY
REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS FOR A SIX-MONTH RESEARCH POSITION.
The Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative at Harvard Kennedy School is seeking applications for a six-month full-time research position, with possible extension subject to further funding, to undertake mapping work on the use of Web 2.0 interfaces as a means of enhancing corporate accountability.
Web 2.0 applications have had a significant role in empowering individuals to network and share knowledge, ideas and resources. Their use for social and activist organizing is well-known and has become an effective means of galvanizing campaigns. As such, these applications can be an accountability tool employed by civil society groups against companies deemed to be acting inappropriately.
Much less explored is the role web 2.0 applications might play as a means of interactive engagement and accountability between companies and their stakeholders in society – a vehicle in which both sides have an interest in engaging. Early emerging examples of this mutually beneficial use of web 2.0 for enhanced accountability are as:
Ø a means for a company to gain feedback from its stakeholders on what issues are seen as material for inclusion in its social responsibility report.
Ø a platform to invite stakeholders to innovate ideas for social investment projects that would link to a company’s core activities.
Ø an information-sharing platform about the mechanisms, organizations and experts that can facilitate dispute resolution between companies and their stakeholders.
The CSR Initiative’s Governance and Accountability Program is proposing to undertake scoping research to map the forms and usages of web 2.0 applications that might most beneficially be used to enhance interactive accountability between companies and their stakeholders. The specific objectives will be to identify what web 2.0 applications are:
Ø already being used as a means for accountability, with what level of success;
Ø already being applied in the wider context of CSR but could be used to enhance corporate accountability as well;
Ø already being applied beyond the context of CSR but could be applied within the CSR field and specifically to enhance corporate accountability;
Ø not currently being used but suggest themselves as possible innovations to the benefit of enhanced corporate accountability.
The CSRI proposes to take on a full-time researcher for six months to undertake this mapping work for an approximate salary of $30,000. Subject to negotiation, the project will commence in June 2009. Subject to satisfactory completion of the work and the availability of funding, a subsequent phase of follow-up work may be available.
The researcher will begin by setting out a program of work designed to deliver the outcomes identified above and a timeline and benchmarks for delivery. He/she will report to the Director of the Governance and Accountability Program, Caroline Rees. Depending on time available, he/she may also be asked to provide advice and some limited assistance to the BASESwiki project undertaken by the CSR Initiative on behalf of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Business and Human Rights (www.baseswiki.org).
The researcher does not need to be based in Cambridge, but will need to be able to communicate regularly, by email and phone, with the Program Director, Caroline Rees. Applicants will need to show evidence of:
- expertise in the area of social media
- experience and knowledge of corporate social responsibility issues
- an ability to work as a self-starter as well as to collaborate with others
- strong analytical and writing skills
- good interpersonal skills and ideally some experience in conducting research interviews

So how do you tackle that writing sample request? Here are 5 tips to make sure your writing sample doesn't end your chances of getting the job:
1. Know that a lot of people don't send a sample-so if you send one, your chances of scoring an interview just improved. Requiring a writing sample usually drops the candidate pool in half-only about 50% of candidates will take the time to send one. That makes it easier for the recruiter- fewer applicants to consider. (Oh-and if you're thinking you can ignore the request for the writing sample and still remain in contention for the position, think again.)
2. Make sure your sample is perfect and contains no spelling or grammatical errors. Employers aren't seeking writing samples for the fun of it. Most of us have learned that resumes and cover letters are not always written by the candidate. Short of plagiarism (which is never recommended!), candidates usually submit their "true" work in a writing sample. I work in a higher education setting, for example, and good writing skills are important. I can't afford to have staff members sending poor quality emails to faculty or employers, so I carefully read writing samples for obvious problems.
3. Understand that a writing sample request is another form of test. How well does the candidate understand the position and/or the field to which they are applying? Sending a sample educational report on a student to an advertising firm or a report about pregnant teenagers to a nonprofit environmental agency quickly demonstrates that the candidate hasn't thought about the position and the type of writing involved. Don't waste time wishing that the employer would give you more information about the writing sample: sorry, folks, that's part of the test. If the employer doesn't specify what they're seeking, perhaps that's because they expect you to know. If a length is not specified, generally speaking, one or two pages should be fine.

Title of the project and main objectives
Title: Identifying Internet users: technical, legal and economic
analysis of the consequences on privacy, fundamental freedoms,
innovation and business models.
The project concerns the growing possibility of identifying Internet
users and tracking their on-line activities. This issue is to be
analyzed from a multidisciplinary point of view, taking
simultaneously into account technical, legal and economic aspects and
their consequences on privacy, fundamental freedoms, innovation and
The topic is very broad. To start from a specific example, the
research is to be focused, at least initially, on the Italian Decree
n. 144 (now Law n. 155 of 31 luglio 2005). This law was adopted as an
emergency measure to fight terrorism and to increase the safety of
citizens and of national infrastructures and currently conditions
Internet access on the strong identification of Internet users (via
picture I.D., or, in recent cases, via SMS). While enhanced safety is
certainly a worthy societal objective, the consequences on privacy and
other fundamental freedoms of citizens, but also on innovation and
business models, have so far not been investigated. Among the issues
involved are: the widespread availability of Wi-Fi in Italy, the
adoption of advanced technologies, such as wireless mesh networks, the
likelihood that shopping malls or bars offer free Internet connection
to their customers. A rational costs-benefits analysis, therefore, has
so far not been possible, preventing the identification of solutions
representing a widely agreed upon trade-off between, on the one side,
enhanced protection from criminal activities and, on the other side,
individual and entrepreneurial fundamental liberties.
The impact of the aforementioned Italian law, therefore, is to provide
the initial case study for the research project, but would not
represent the exclusive focus of the analysis. The research, in fact,
should provide a comparative analysis of the situation and similar laws
in OECD countries; furthermore, the NEXA Center for Internet & Society
intends to study this and similar issues and their social and economic
impact, with the goal of reaching a deeper understanding of the
interrelationship between anonymity, privacy and Internet access.
The project will be supervised by the directors of the NEXA Center for
Internet & Society and will take place in coordination with the staff
of the Center.
This job opening concerns a research grant ("assegno di ricerca") for
the duration of 1 year (in principle, renewable) and with a yearly

PhD Research Project Position
“Deep Packet Inspection and Internet Governance”
Technology University of Delft, Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Section
Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) is a technology that enables the network operator to
analyze Internet packets as they move through the network, and make decisions about
how to handle them based on their contents. This research project will examine the
deployment of DPI by Internet service providers, and analyze its impact on Internet
governance policies and Internet users. The project will explore whether DPI capabilities
constitute a disruptive technology that will lead to major changes in the way the Internet
is governed and in the operational practices and business models of Internet service
providers. The Ph.D. student would attempt to discover the extent to which Internet
service providers (ISPs) are deploying DPI and to identify the economic, technical
regulatory and political factors that promote and constrain its use. DPI is already being
deployed or proposed in areas such as bandwidth management, content regulation,
intrusion detection, behavioral advertising and copyright enforcement. The overall
purpose would be to scientifically assess the implications of DPI deployment on the
privacy, security and freedom of Internet users.
The successful Ph.D. candidate will become an integral part of the scientific staff of the
ICT Section. While the focus of the job will be on the specific research project, the
candidate is expected to participate in, contribute to and invest in the further development
of scientific knowledge in the field of Internet governance. About 80% of the time is
allocated for Ph.D. research activities; the remaining time is dedicated to the support of
the educational activities of the Section and some minor management tasks.
Appropriate candidates for this research position will need to be capable of and
enthusiastic about interdisciplinary work. Candidates will need to combine an
understanding of networking technology with social science disciplines, preferably
economics and/or political science. Applicants should have a master’s degree in any
relevant discipline, along with strong academic motivation and ambition. The successful
candidate must possess the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment of
economists, political scientists, information scientists and engineers. We are especially

Berkman Center Fellowship Opportunity: Broadband Research
Duties And Responsibilities: The Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University is actively seeking a resident fellow to join the Center immediately and lead its ongoing project examining the role of broadband access in society and the policy decisions that affect its nature. Working closely with the project leadership and others in the Berkman community, the fellow will be responsible for coordinating all aspects of the broadband project, including: shaping research questions and focus, reviewing extant literature, supervising research assistants, performing data analysis, writing case studies, coordinating with outside researchers and soliciting input, communicating with entities like the FCC, monitoring new activity in the space, and relationship-building. In particular, through early fall of 2009, Berkman will assist the Federal Communications Commission in reviewing worldwide broadband studies. The project is a collaborative effort including Harvard faculty, Berkman Center fellows, and student researchers.
