(Message from AfriNIC)
AfriNIC is pleased to invite you to attend the 2nd Annual West Africa IGF (WAIGF) that is being held 14-16 October 2009, at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, Accra, Ghana. The forum will be attended by regulators, academia, civil society, governments, private sector, the technical community, and other leaders and stakeholders in the Internet community. This event is open to the public and will be hosted by the Ghana Ministry of Communications.
This event is a part of a broader Internet Governance initiative that we are establishing with stakeholders and is referred to as the WAIGF initiative, which will also be used as aformal preparatory forum to improve West Africa’s contribution to the global Internet Governance Forum.
The three (3) day forum will include discussions on Internet governance, Internet Access, Capacity Building and the Internet, Role of Government in Internet Development, Cyber Crimes & Cyber Security, and a Government/Regulator’s Roundtable discussion.
Anticipated outcomes of this event are: That relationships are established, promoted and strengthened; A more global platform will be established to consolidate key issues and concerns affecting development of the Internet throughout Africa; Continuity can be achieved from similar local and regional efforts being made, such as the EAIGF in Nairobi, Kenya, the West Africa IG Workshop held in March 2009, and the IG Workshop held in Dakar, Senegal, Oct 2008; and, That other local IGF initiatives will be established in areas where they do not currently exist or are in the process of being formed to ultimately result in a global African IGF.
